As one of Canada’s largest regional acute care hospitals, Humber River Regional Hospital (HRRH) offers a full range of medical services to 800,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The hospital is a designated Regional Paediatric Centre, a member of the Child Health Network of the GTA, a Regional Dialysis Centre – with Canada’s first home nocturnal dialysis program – and home to Ontario’s first medical Centre of Excellence, for laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

HRRH provides new graduates with a great working environment including varied case loads and a diverse clinical population. HRRH has outstanding orientation and staff education programs in place for all disciplines. Ongoing education is supported through professional practice groups, clinical programs and educational services. Under our professional practice model, each discipline is represented by a professional practice counsel that assesses educational needs and considers clinical issues. Also, we are in partnership with many academic institutions, providing clinicians and students the opportunity to work together on a regular basis.

At HRRH, the patient is the focus of everything we do. We are strongly committed to an interdisciplinary patient care model. Recently, we instituted a system of online clinical documentation that will help support our interdisciplinary patient care teams. We take pride in providing high-quality services consistent with best practices.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists at HRRH are committed to their patients’ needs and proud of the care they deliver through various programs and services. Our 45 physiotherapists and 24 physiotherapy assistants work in a variety of environments within this large, regional acute care hospital.

In the inpatient acute areas, physiotherapists work in general medicine, oncology, renal services, orthopedics, cardiology, respirology, emergency, critical care, neurology and geriatrics. Also, physiotherapists provide their services to our 18-bed inpatient rehab unit and work closely with the Total Joint Network to attain excellence in outcomes. Our outpatient rehab physiotherapists treat patients recovering from orthopedic surgeries.

In all areas of the hospital, physiotherapists are recognized for their excellence in assessment, treatment and critical thinking skills. They are key participants on our multidisciplinary teams and prime decision-makers on hospital-wide committees and in the areas of accreditation, professional development and professional practice.

Physiotherapists at HRRH thrive in our team-oriented environment where open communication ensures all patient goals and needs are addressed with dignity and respect. Professional development for physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants is supported through the committed initiatives of management, professional practice counsels and educational services. All physiotherapists attend monthly professional development forums to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Physiotherapists at HRRH are committed to continual learning and improvement, sharing their knowledge and skills with colleagues, physiotherapy students and physiotherapy assistant students. Clinical mentorship for new staff is a strength of our organization, supported by specialized in-house workshops and additional reimbursement.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists at HRRH enjoy working in a dynamic multicultural setting as key members of an interdisciplinary team. Committed to client-centred care, occupational therapists strive to maximize the functional capabilities of individuals living with various illnesses and injuries. Occupational therapists perform comprehensive assessments and devise client-specific interventions, with the aim of facilitating their patient’s return to productive community living. Occupational therapists use their expertise to work collaboratively with patients, families and a diverse healthcare team in addressing client goals.

Occupational therapists at HRRH are employed across various programs, including medicine, surgery, women’s and children’s health, mental health and outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation. Occupational therapists are given exciting opportunities to participate in professional practice activities, and have pioneered various initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Speech Language Pathologists

The speech language pathologists at HRRH enjoy a varied case load, a great deal of direct patient contact and the opportunity to be challenged and continually learning on the job. They have the ability to make immediate impact on patients through the use of diet, texture changes and swallowing techniques.

Speech language pathologists work in a variety of settings, from surgery through geriatrics, throughout the hospital. They take part in medical rounds, liaise with other clinical staff and participate in professional practice meetings. At HRRH, speech language pathologists are a key component of our quality care to patients.

Registered Respiratory Therapists

Registered respiratory therapists at HRRH work as part of interdisciplinary teams, providing patient care 24 hours a day. Their skills are required in many areas of the hospital, including critical care, emergency, OR, patient care units and chronic outpatient testing. They perform advanced practices such as arterial line insertion, bronchoscopy assistance, neo-natal incubation, and work in adult and neo-natal intensive care units providing ventilator management and performing intubations. Registered respiratory therapists also participate in a student program.
